Player Profile: Stephen 'Franchise' Presley
by Skip 'Skizip' Hobbie

I
f you are member of the UPA, you may have recognized a familiar face when you opened your mailbox this week. Austin's own boy wonder of friz, Stephen "Franchise" Presley has found his way onto the cover of this spring's USA Ultimate Magazine, published by the UPA. To anyone that has played with or against Stevie, this may come as no surprise, but for those of you Austinites who haven't been lucky enough to share a field with him, this player profile in our inaugural newsletter will hopefully help you get to know him better.

When Stevie first showed up at a UT Men's practice in the fall of 2004, he was just another freshman... at least until he stepped on the field. At 5 foot 8, Franchise carries a big smile, golden curls on his head, and is not in the least what you would describe as physically imposing. In no time at all though, it was clear that TUFF (the UT Men's A team) had picked up a very special player.

Mexico!!
by Gary Breaux

C
hoose which item doesn’t belong with the others: A) Mexico, B) Tequila, C) Amigos, D) Fiestas, E) Ultimate

JA! That was a trick question; they ALL belong together. When you think of Mexico, you may not immediately think of Ultimate even though the sport has been played down there since 1982.

Today Mexico has a vibrant Ultimate community comprised of the same type of special, quirky and passionate players you’ll find anywhere Ultimate is played. Mexico hosts an average of 6 tournaments per year including three that may be of particular interest to YOU.

Just Another Day at the Office?
by Sheena Madan

E
mployees from eight companies brought teams to enjoy ultimate in the corporate tournament on April 4th, 2009 in Manor, TX. Many who had never played organized ultimate before were introduced to the joys of it for the first time.

To encourage the spirit of the game, the tournament had spirit ratings for every team. There were also special rules that were tailored to newcomers, such as a Mulligan (do-over) that could only be called by a new player, and a double point for an O'Malley (everyone touches the disc in one scoring sequence) with a minimum of two new people on the field.

W
hat has UPLA been doing of late to support youth ultimate in the Austin area? We're glad you asked ...

On March 1st, a donation of 80 discs was made to all players who participated in the recently completed 2009 Austin High School Winter League season! Several UPLA board members were present and helped to hand out the discs. And, this donation was made in support of another organization, Texas Ultimate!, working to promote ultimate here in Austin!
