The Austin Scoober
August 2009

What does "Spirit of the Game" mean to you? After discussing this with a variety of people, I realized that it means many things. This month kicks off the start to a series exploring Spirit of the Game.
Here's my take on Spirit: Spirit is how you play during the game and when standing on the sidelines. Not only is it how you treat your opponents but also your teammates. Spirit is keeping your cool when someone else has an outburst no matter what the circumstance is. Spirit is understanding when to step into a discussion about a play and when to keep out. Spirit is actually knowing the rules to Ultimate...

Exorcizing the Spirit of the Game
by Cindy Stowell
We've all played in an ultimate game gone bad. Every third throw sparks a foul debate that invokes both the uncertainty principle and Godwin's Law in the same sentence. During the stopped play, other players on the field either stare at the turtle-shaped clouds out of boredom or tear off their hats like they are about to charge the mound. And then the thrower calls a time out not to discuss strategy, but to complain to teammates about how the mark is a total jackhole (but, you know, said with naughty words). The spirit of the game has become a ghost.

Cara and Team USA bring back Gold!
by Michael "Tank" Natenberg
10,000cheering fans, stadium lights, locker rooms, trainers, masseuses and chiropractors, managers, instant reply on the Jumbo-Tron! The players at the 8th World Games hosted in Kaohsiung City, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) experienced all of this. From July 19th thru 21st, Ultimate Frisbee was on display in the main stadium specifically built for the World Games; think a smaller but no less impressive Bird's Nest. 6 countries: USA, Japan, Canada, Australia, Great Britain, and Taiwan competed for the medals.

Colorado Cup Recap
by Marcus "Cous" Gavin
This past weekend, four Austin club Ultimate teams headed north to Boulder, CO for the annual Colorado Cup. Doublewide competed in the Elite open division; Showdown competed in the women's division; and both Seuss and Riverside competed in the open division. While the teams had mixed results, they all gained some valuable experience that will surely help as the young club season progresses.

Changing Young Lives Through Ultimate
by Jean Gaetan
"THANK YOU for helping me change young lives through Ultimate," says Barbara Denison (known worldwide simply as "Bubba") to the lunchtime Riversiders. For several weeks each summer, Bubba puts on an Ultimate Spirit Camp for kids that attend the South Austin Boys & Girls Club. Many of these kids come from difficult backgrounds and Bubba has long held the vision that Ultimate can play a unique role in teaching these kids true life skills.

Fresh Faces
by Gary Breaux
Read it. Don't skim it. Don't glance at it. Don't read it while driving (and texting). Really read it. The future of Austin Ultimate depends on it.
Hey folks. Gary here. I've been around Austin Ultimate quite a while and working as much as anyone to see Austin Ultimate grow and flourish. Mostly I do it because I love playing Ultimate and I selfishly want more opportunities to get my game on. But I also do it because I know that following my own interest (selfish though they may be) creates reverberations to a much wider circle of people and enhances the total cosmic goodness for all...or whatever.

Texas Club Sectionals Comes to Austin
by UPLA Board
Putting a team together for the fall series? Here are things you should know. Texas sectionals for the open, women's and mixed divisions will be September 19th and 20th in Austin at UT's IM fields. Teams must submit a roster using UPA's online rostering system by August 28th, although teams may add up to seven players after that date. (Those seven players must be added by September 15th.) Rosters must contain at least 7 and no more than 27 players. There are deadline extensions available for college-based teams. All players on the roster must be UPA members and have a current waiver form on file by the tournament date.

Age Before Beauty
by Paul Normandin
Rusty arms never sleep. As proof positive, the UPA hosted the first-ever Open Grand Masters (40 or older) and Women's Masters (30 or older) National Championships in Denver July 11-12. There are no such stats, but it's doubtful that any city sent more players to this momentous event than ours: Central Texans made up the bulk of three (3!) Grand Masters teams and one Women's Masters squad, and Austinites played key roles on yet another Women's team.
