The Austin Scoober
December 2009
|
It's been said that kids have it easier these days. If you're a kid playing ultimate in Austin this is definitely the case. When I was in middle and high school, the only ultimate we played was after school at the local park or during Cross Country's off-season—no formal team or coach, just a bunch of kids with a Wham-O, energy to burn, and maybe a touch of homework procrastination. Today Austin boasts over 20 middle school and high school teams. And this number is growing.

Passing the Frozen Torch
by Gary Breaux
Austin Winter League is, without question, the most awesome league ever in the history of leagues. Yup, I said it. As evidence I submit: food and drink every week...at no extra charge; a custom-designed disc and (for the first time) a dry-fit jersey...at no extra charge; two weekly games of Ultimate on lined fields within the city limits...at no extra charge; showcase games, parties, player packets, updated webpages, plus bedazzle in your badonka-donk, all at... (say it with me, people)... NO EXTRA CHARGE! I know; get the eff outta here, right?

On Thursday, November 20th, the Murchison Ultimate team wrapped up their fall session with a practice that featured several players from TUFF. Middle school ultimate met college disc as the players threw around together and got to know each other. Several Murchison players were prepared with brainstormed questions to ask their mentors, and the college guys took several minutes to answer them. Here are the results:

Celebracion pics are here!
by Iram J. Leon
Celebracion has come and gone and I'm already in post tournament depression mode. Thank you all for putting in a bid and for making this a very fun Celebracion Del Espiritu 2009. I'm sure we'll be back in 2010.
Congratulations to Sparky Grape, 2009 Winner. They went undefeated the whole weekend with great spirit and great fun.

Learn the Rules: Back in Play!
by Jason "Punk" Conrad
Picture this: It's 14-14 in a game hard-capped to 15, double ultimate point. A sweet huck goes up and the receiver catches the disc outside the endzone at full speed. After landing he takes a couple steps into the endzone, stops and goes back to the goal line, plants his pivot foot and throws an easy backhand to his teammate in the endzone just out of reach of his defender. The team starts to celebrate their victory over their rival in another close game. But what's wrong with this picture? It's that annoying travel call from the guy that just got burned on the huck. The receiver hollers back, "What are you talking about? My pivot foot was set on the goal line and never moved…learn the rules!" I've seen it many times and I'm sure you have too. Who's right? Should the goal count or should it come back to the thrower? Read on and "learn the rules."
