Good Luck Texas Boys, represent the South!!

The Austin Scoober
May 2009

Women's ultimate has never gotten the press that men's ultimate has gotten in the past. In all fairness, there are many more guys than women that play ultimate, but once in a while some acknowledgement would be nice. Which is why we were all surprised when the New York Times posted an article about competitive women's ultimate. This article was awesome because it discussed ultimate as a true hard core sport and not some hippy fling similar to disc golf (no offense to hippies or disc golf). And I actually like the fact that it was in the Fashion section because then women who typically shy away from sports would actually read it.

Another stride in women's ultimate occurred at College Women's Centex, where 32 of the best teams in the US came together and fought it on the field. It was a huge move for the UT women to decide to break away from the usual dual division weekend and create a tournament that focused only on competitive women's. And it worked. One of the best things that came out of that weekend was teams hanging out and interacting with each other- at the Friday night social, dance off (guys you would not understand), and heckling the rookies in the showcase game. UltiVillage was even there to shoot footage, and their women's footage got more hits than in the past. In order to grow women's ultimate, we need to create that kind of camaraderie. So ladies, next time you are on the field and you see someone you don't know, spend a few minutes chatting with her and spread the ultimate love.

by Gary Breaux

U
PLA presents an in your face first-time ever league event that will blow you away. Take that thumb out of your mouth, little baby, and get ready to MAN-UP!!

Woosies, wimps and wannabees need not apply! DO NOT invite your newbie friends to play in this League. This league is exclusively designed for rock star club players! It will be called Competitive Summer League and promises to be like no other league that has come before it. (Yes, you will feel bad for your turnovers, but here's a hot tip for ya....suck it up!)

The league will be coed and sign-up begins in about 1 1/2 weeks. Everyone and their mother is welcome to sign-up, but here's the deal, mon cheri, it may occur that not everyone who signs up gets drafted. Anyone not drafted will receive a 100% refund of their player fee. Your money is not at risk...only your pride.

H
ow many of you wonder what happens to your tournament and league fees? Well, my friends, prepare to be freed from those dire straits of blissful ignorance as we let you in to the shadowy world of UPLA high finance. (In case you've been living under a Frisbee, the Ultimate Players League of Austin, or "UPLA" [pronounced YOU-play], is our community's attempt to bring organization and coordination to Austin Ultimate.)

Perhaps you've been picturing the UPLA board bathing itself in a sea of crumpled, sweaty $20 bills. Not true! We don't even bathe with soap! (We use vinegar and lemon juice, but I digress.) For one thing, board members are 100% volunteer. Contrary to popular rumor, there are no weekly UPLA-sponsored champagne brunches, retreats to luxury resort spas or million-dollar, AIG-style bonuses. As unsexy as it is...the largest expenditures of UPLA funds by far are advance payments for fields and discs for tournaments and leagues. Womp-waaaah.

Texas Women's Regionals
by Michelle Ng

T
exas Women's Ultimate sent two teams to South Regionals in Little Rock, Arkansas on April 25-26. After months of practice and conditioning and winning the Texas Section in early April, Melee had high hopes of earning one of the two bids to Nationals. Unfortunately, despite playing some of their best ultimate of the season, Melee finished 3rd, losing to St. Louis 14-11 in the game-to-go to Nationals. Here is a recap of some of Melee's big games and highlights from the weekend:

T
he elite women's team Showdown, which participated in Nationals last year, is currently hosting tryouts for the fall series. Cara Crouch provided us with more information about them.

Showdown's overall goal is to combine the best regional talent into an elite-level and nationally competitive ultimate team while upholding principles of sportsmanship, leadership, and friendship. We play for the love of the game and the satisfaction of striving for the best from ourselves and our teammates on and off the field.
