Celebración Winter League Doublewide Showdown SOTG Trends Cross Training The New Guy

The Austin Scoober
November 2009

I had only been playing ultimate two weeks (for Melee) before I went to my first tournament. It was sort of by luck. One of the guys on Tuff sprained his ankle and was looking to get rid of his plane ticket (that was back when you could still change the name on the ticket). I was persuaded to buy it from him and it was one of the best decisions I've made in my life. My first ultimate tournament was President's Day held in sunny San Diego California for 3 days.

Celebración del Espíritu

Celebración del Espíritu is one of Austin Ultimate's oldest and most cherished tournament traditions. This disc-fiesta has been taking place every Fall since Poncho Villa was a nińo. On 21-22 of November, it all happens once again- the costumes, the tequila, the post-game games, and THE PARTY (oh yeah, and some Ultimate, too).

Austin Winter League
by Paul Hanna

Turn off the Sega Genesis. Unplug the Super NES. Put the Atari on the shelf. This winter, the real games are outside. Are you a speedy veteran with Tecmo-Bowl style hucks and Street Fighter II combos? Or just a banana peel slingin' Diddy Kong type looking to stir things up while learning a thing or two from the pros? Either way, Austin Winter League is ready for you!

The Doublewide Sarasota Experience
by Marcus Gavin

T
ied at 13's. Double game point. Pulling to Ring of Fire for a chance to get 5th place and finish higher than Doublewide has ever placed...

It's hard to believe that three days of Ultimate all came down to one point, but that was the scenario. The season was on the line, and even though only seven dubs could take the field, all 26 dubs were in the game ready to leave it all there.

Women's Nationals Recap
by Tina Woodings

I
t's all about peaking at the right time.

After a laid back preseason starting in March Showdown's true season began in July. Their first tournament was only one week after their first practice and it showed with a less than stellar performance. Over the next two tournaments leading up to Sectionals the team placed emphasis on creating chemistry and developing its players through equal play time.

Spirit of the Game: Trends or Lack Thereof
by Cindy Stowell

I
set out to write an article about the geographic trends in ultimate's spirit of the game. I hoped to prove that all northeasterners (myself included) are spiritless ninnies [original choice of word censored] or that small towns are obscenely spirited. I wanted hard conclusions, showing that pickup games were full of spirit, and people were at each other's throats at Nationals.

Stay In Shape By Cross Training
by Marisa Krisananuwatara

U
ltimate Frisbee season is now over. You are in the best shape of your life. But how can you stay in shape for the next season? You think that you can keep playing Ultimate and do track workouts. Nope. You may be in awesome shape for the club Ultimate season, but if playing Ultimate or doing Frisbee workouts is all you do all year long, you may be setting yourself up for injury or mental burnout, and that is not a good way to stay fit.

Remembering The New Guy
by Jean Gaetan

O
nce upon a time, even the most experienced Ultimate player was the new guy. You know what I'm talking about- the guy who criss-crosses the field, yelling for the disc with one hand flapping up in the air; the girl who exhausts herself so quickly she tries to sub out in the middle of a point; or, the dude who too-hastily flings the disc with all of his might only to watch it arc absurdly high and wide...crashing to ground three fields away. (Sometimes the skills just haven't quite caught up to the vision being ESPN's Play-of-the-Day.) In fact, not only do you know that guy, you've been him. Man or woman, we've all been THAT GUY!
