The Austin Scoober
September 2009
|
Fields. They're so difficult to find and now, with the drought, they're hard and remind me of conditions dating back to the Dust Bowl. UPLA has been exploring different ideas to try to find good fields for Austin players. We've started dialogue with Travis County Parks and the City of Austin. We've also contacted some of the fields owned by soccer leagues but have invariably been turned down. So, for now, our leagues are in Manor - those are the closest and nicest fields we've been able to reserve.
We would love to have the opportunity to create our own fields. But procuring fields is not so easy. To date only one city in North America has pulled this feat off by themselves (fundraising, purchasing the land, and creating the fields) and that was in Canada. A handful of other cities have built fields in conjunction with their city parks department. That being said, UPLA would like to move forward to procure fields but we need help to do so. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact me at tinawoodings (at) gmail (dot) com.

Do We Really Need to Be Told to Play Fair?
by Cindy Stowell
The development of most sports follows a similar path. Somewhere, some people have a good idea. They take some physical activity that is challenging and fun, and experiment and tinker with the rules and equipment until optimized. The game begins to spread and to prevent Calvinball-like chaos, rules are drafted. The sport grows more, a national association or league is formed, and somewhere in the midst of the growth, officials are introduced to make calls and enforce the rules. Take basketball, for example. The game was developed in 1891, the first official game played in 1892, and by 1905 there was a national organization and rules calling for 11 officials present at each game.

Ankle Sprain Rehabilitation
by Nazish Waliany
As ultimate players, we generally don't take very good care of our bodies. Running in 100+ degree heat, playing four or five grueling games in one day, laying out at all angles, and continuing to play on injured joints and strained muscles, we are gluttons for punishment. One of the most common injuries we see on the field is an ankle sprain. Not only are they popular in ultimate, ankle sprains are the most common sports-related injury to the foot and ankle. Because of their prevalence, the rehabilitation process should be taken seriously to prevent recurrent injuries or any loss of function in the future.

Summer League Winners!
by Gary Breaux
Summer League 2009 just recently ended for another year. Eight solid weeks were played without any rainouts. Yeah! Though, we sure could have used the rain. The fields may still have received plenty of moisture in the form of player-sweat. It was freakin' hot like a mutha hubbard out there. Well, mostly just game one. By game two the sun had set and the cool country breezes took over.

My First Ultimate Experience
by Andy Leffler
It started with a friend introducing me to a pick up game that lead to another pick up game. It became a great way to get the exercise I sorely missed. A couple of the players at the pick up game had said Summer League was going to start and that the pick up game at Patterson Park would end. So when my friend emailed me the link I stepped out of my comfort zone and signed up right away. For the most part sign up was easy. My first attempt was rejected due to some glitch, so I tried again and it worked. It was nice to be able to purchase a disc and jersey, it all seemed so official.

Player Profile: Frankie!
by Jean Gaetan
It is easy to recognize and celebrate the bright and shiny best-of-the-best within our sport, but it is players like UPLA's profiled player of the month, Frankie Bates, that make up the broadest section of the Ultimate player demo. The same factors that make this sport fun for more high-profile players like Stephen "Franchise" Presley (featured in the April issue of The Austin Scoober), Cara Crouch - former Callahan Award Winner, or Scotty Berens - Crazed Serial Killer, apply just the same to Ultimate players throughout the full spectrum of skill level.
