Spring League Returns!
Spring is in the air and you know what that means... Austin Spring League is here! Spring league traditionally caters toward beginning players, though it does draw frisbee lovers of all abilities. Spring league offers a chance for newer players to learn the game of Ultimate a little better while making some awesome frisbee friends. The beloved and memorable childhood game of Candyland will be the inspiration for this league. The potential for team names is endless. So make your way through the Candy Cane forest, climb to the top of Gum Drop Mountain and bask in the glow of the beautiful Queen Frostine.

Ultimate Gold
by Jean Gaetan
Copper, Nickel, Aluminum, Silver, Gold, Platinum...these are just a few of the naturally occurring metals known collectively as the precious metals. Common knowledge about the unique intrinsic qualities each metal possesses allows us to mentally assign a value to each. If an equal sized lump of each of the precious metals was placed on a table in front of you and you were told to pick one lump to keep for yourself, you would undoubtedly grab the lump of gold and make for the door. (And this has what to do with Ultimate?)

The NEW College Season
by Tina Woodings
Unbeknownst to anyone who does not play college ultimate, some major changes have occurred this year with bid allocations to nationals. Starting with the 2009 season, 20 teams attend nationals; prior to 2009, only 16 teams qualified. Each of the 8 regions receive two bids, but the way the additional bids are being allocated has changed. The UPA now has an official "College Regular Season" January 1st to March 28th. The results of games between rostered college teams at UPA-sanctioned events will count towards the Official UPA College Rankings. Teams need to participate in a minimum of 10 regular season games to be included in the rankings.

It Was an Accident!
by Jason "Punk" Conrad
A cutter and a defender are both going deep for a huck when their legs get tangled and the offensive cutter falls down 30 yards before the disc is even catchable. "FOUL!" is called and the disc hits the ground with only the defender near it. A discussion ensues and the crowd hears the defender argue: "That's incidental contact, it was an accident!" The cutter retorts, "I had a play on that disc, it's a foul." Who is right and how do the rules handle this common situation?

Observer Clinic — March 20-21
by Jason "Punk" Conrad
If you actually read my articles on the rules and are interested in them, I have the opportunity for you! As your friendly, local observer coordinator for the south region, I wanted to let y'all know about the upcoming observer certification clinic in Austin March 20th and 21st during men's College Centex. It will be held in conjunction with the tournament at the IM fields and will include classroom training, on-field demonstrations, a test, and finally on-field observing for all of the trainees.
