The Austin Scoober
October 2010
|
It's been a long season this year for Doublewide and Showdown. In many ways, it's been like 2 seasons. Practices and workouts began earlier this year to prepare for Worlds in July. And with Nationals at the end of October, there was little time to rest before getting right back to the grind. So how do teams survive training so long and how do they get motivated for another big tournament?

Masters Division - Austin-based Team "Jack" Shows Strong
by Rob Seidenberg
Overall, the new Austin-based Masters team, Jack, had a very good Regionals tournament. With the late addition of a few Riverside "youngsters" (Andre Dumouchelle and Will Lafferty ) and Gabriel Fuzat (formerly of Mileage), Jack had a strong and deep roster. On Saturday, in addition to beating the Ozark Hillbillys and WD-40, a grab bag team from throughout the South, Jack took down the number one seed Ball & Chain in a rough, grind-it-out, slugfest [Note, no players were actually slugged].

Celebracion Del Espiritu is just around the corner!
Celebracion del Espiritu, an Austin Tradition since 1836, is back November 20th and 21st at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. This is that increible torneo where all teams in costume receive una botella de tequila! Los Campeones will receive a pinata stuffed with Mexican candies and even more tequila! The tournament will have the same great taco stand we had at Regionals. The party will be a black/white event en La Calle 6 (6th St.) at the Belmont where you can order a margarita with tequila (plus several other drink specials) but we wanted to stay on theme!

No Break!

Physical Therapist at Catz Austin and guy on the mark
It's the second game of the second day of the tournament. Your legs are fried. Your feet have blisters, and the strawberry on your leg is starting to bleed again. You've been playing ultimate for 8 hours and you want more. You want to win the tournament and you want to be able to show up at pickup on Monday and trade battle stories. You also want to actually play at pickup on Monday, and not just sit on the sidelines heckling. The problem is in your, leg, foot, knee, and ankle - it just won't go away in time.

Ultimate Photography - It Takes a Lot to Be Good
by Jean Gaetan
Photographing Ultimate is almost as great a challenge for photographers as playing Ultimate is for players. While anyone can grab their camera and snap a couple hundred photos of Ultimate in an afternoon, the question is, would anyone care to look at them? Not if the images are blurred, out of focus, or worse yet -- uninteresting.
