Scoober Scoop Profile: Brad Swordfight Catching a Goal Club Regionals New Kids on the Brick

The Austin Scoober
September 2010

We had a great UPLA meeting this week. Though the turnout from the community was a tad light, there were still lively discussions about the goals and budget for UPLA for 2010-2011. As a refresher, UPLA's mission statement is:

To serve the greater Austin community by organizing, promoting and developing the sport and spirit of Ultimate for all ages and levels of competition;

More thoroughly...

Scoober Scoop
Austin Ultimate has really seem an upsurge since we got our "S" together a few years ago and formed UPLA- the Ultimate Players League of Austin. The whole intent of creating an organizing body for Austin Ultimate was to take advantage of the power of coordination. Before UPLA (pronounced YOU-play), leagues, tournaments and other Ultimate-related events were haphazardly thrown together and planned (sometimes one on top of the other)... with varying degrees of quality, etc. Now, a calendar of events is maintained right on the austinultimate.org website that everyone can see. Whoa! It's simply revolutionary! But there's more... and it's staring you right in the face.

Player Profile: Brad Kaylor
by Tina Woodings

Brad is what you would call an "old school" ultimate player. His first tournament was Centex 1982 - that's before I was born. Back in those days, local teams were named "Ether Bunnies" and "Snakes". Funny how those hippy names have been replaced with Texas-themed and more intense names. More recently, Brad played on Masters teams that have gone to Worlds and on last year's Grand Masters team "Southern Comfort".

Brad's favorite thing about ultimate is, as he says it, "pretty much everything." What he means by that is: the people, the game, and the idea that integrity and sportsmanship rule the game - concepts we should use in everyday life.

Catching a Goal
by Mark "Moose" Krasniewski

Do you know what it takes to score a goal? Doesn't everybody? You just need to get a little space on your defender in the end zone to catch the disc, and just like that you've scored another point for your team. It seems simple, but it isn't always that straightforward. It turns out that there are some nuances to even one of the most fundamental parts of Ultimate: scoring.

2010 Club Regionals Coming to Austin
by Jean Gaetan

It is both an honor and a privilege for Austin to have earned the opportunity to host the USA Ultimate 2010 Southern Club Regionals tournament the weekend of October 2-3.

If you've been around Ultimate for a while, you already know what all that fanciness in the title means. But, for those less familiar with the lingo, let's break it down for ya...

The New Kids on the Brick – Austin's 2010 Rookie Squads
by Paul Hanna

It's been quite a year for Austin Ulty. While club classics Doublewide and Showdown gave the world a taste of ATX Ultimate in Prague, a revolution occurred stateside in somewhat of a rebuilding year for Austin club Ultimate. Hometown mainstays Showdown, Dub, Riverside, Graze, Seuss, BID and the like have survived the transition, but some others weren't as lucky as their identities have seemed to slip into oblivion to make way for the future (it's like the circle of life, except it's Ultimate). Anyway, let's highlight some of the new squads making their Championship Series debut in 2010...
