The Austin Scoober
March 2011

Having the skills to break the mark is the most important throwing skill you can have. I'm sure people are sick of me harping on it when coaching Mayhem practice, playing on Showdown and even in league games (I try really hard to keep my mouth shut when playing pickup). Here's the analysis of why it's important and how to do it.

The Most Important Thing You Can Do This Summer.
It feels like spring has arrived in sunny Austin, and with that comes relief from the 'cold weather' we had this winter. Right now we're in that small window of time where it's not too hot and not too cold - for once the weather seems absolutely perfect. And Austinites are outside soaking up the sun and sub 100-degree temperatures we know are coming all too soon.

Talk About All-Around Great Experiences: Attending the USA Ultimate National Organizers Convention
by Bill Marriott
For those that don't know, USA Ultimate (USAU) hosted their biennial conference the weekend of February 26th - 27th in Washington D.C. I wouldn't have known about it myself had I not gotten a request from Tina Woodings, UPLA's President, to attend (along with her and Hayley Manning, another UPLA Board member). Due to the fact that I've got some friends and family members living in the DC area, I figured it would be a good excuse to see them (with the conference activities expected to serve as an aside).

Reelin' in the Tiers
by Gary Breaux
"I will never play on Doublewide." Alright, I said it. (Admitting something out loud makes it real.) Certainly, I don't say it happily...as if I would not like to play on Doublewide; I say it only because I cannot physically do it. Unfortunately, the Flying Spaghetti Monster did not bestow upon me the inherent physical attributes required to play Ultimate at that elite level. I am a second tier player....and Doublewide plays on the first tier.

Disc Request for Those in Need
by Amanda Berens
Two years ago Scott and I traveled to Cebu City, Philippines to visit family and tour around the beautiful tropical islands. While we were there, we held two Ultimate clinics for local teams and a series of five clinics for children living in the impoverished neighborhoods of downtown Cebu.
The local teams were a lot of fun and were sponges for new information. One of the teams we coached has gone on to be the best team in the region even with an average age of about 18. Many of the younger kids that we helped out had never seen a disc before, and were absolutely enthralled to see a sport that they could play in tight urban spaces and that needed nothing but a piece of round plastic.
