The Austin Scoober
February 2012
|
For the very first time in Scoober history, we have chosen a theme! And that theme is: Women in Ultimate. The article titled Women Against the Wind, is a no holds barred look at the female experience playing coed Ultimate in Austin. It was written by frequent Scoober contributor, Jean Gaetan, with lots of input from several local female players. Colleen Conrad also contributes an excellent article, Hey Sista: The Real Beauty of Women's Ultimate, espousing the unique joy of playing women's Ultimate. The last article, by Gary Breaux, Where's All the Ultimate Women At?, discusses interesting strategies for increasing the number of women playing Ultimate.

Women Against the Wind
by Jean Gaetan
Men are ignorant. Yes, that's an in-your-face statement intended to get your attention... but it also happens to be true. Men are ignorant about what it's like being a female in a sport that is 80% weighted towards males. By the way, 80% is not a made up number thrown out to sound huge but with no basis in reality. Do the math, Fibonacci -- Austin Ultimate leagues average four male players for each female. Whether Spring, Summer, or Winter League, it's always roughly the same thing, 4:1 male; a veritable dude-fest every time you step onto the field.

Hey Sista: The Real Beauty of Women's Ultimate
by Colleen Conrad
When Cara Crouch accepted the Callahan Award at College Nationals in 2005, her speech was one simple sentence:
"It's all about Melee."
To the point. Short and sweet. The crowd went wild, even if they didn't really know what it meant, and her teammates erupted into frenzied celebration.

Where's All the Ultimate Women At?
by Gary Breaux
It's a chronic and painful problem... (No, not my nightly jimmy legs.) There are too few women... playing Ultimate. Try as we might Austin leagues can never seem to muster more than 3 or 4 women per team. (Compare that to 13 or 14 guys per team.) What's up?! Are the men in this town so scary and stinky the woman stay away in droves? [Rhetorical question only, btw.] With such a large gender disparity, coed Ultimate struggles to uphold the coed label. Yes, it's that bad!
